LATEST | Allvin and the Canucks have made their intentions clear regarding Elias Lindholm and his future in Vancouver
The Vancouver Canucks' biggest splash ahead of the National Hockey League's trade deadline was forward Elias Lindholm and while he hasn't played as well as many were hoping, he's still adjusting and there's still time before the team needs him the most in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Patrik Allvin and the Canucks' management group paid a lot to get him, sending prospect Hunter Brzustewicz, Andrei Kuzmenko and a 2024 first-round pick, among other assets, to the Calgary Flames.
In a recent interview with Pierre LeBrun on The Athletic, Patrik Allvin revealed that when the Canucks traded for Elias Lindholm, they informed his camp that they intended to sign him to an extension.
"Initially when we made the deal, I talked to his camp and said our intention was to sign him," Allvin said. "But obviously it's got to work for both sides. We'll see. I think it's been a little bit of an adjustment time for him. And in fairness, the whole team hasn't played great, we knew we were going to have a tough February schedule workload-wise, it was heavy and we got out of it with a .500 record which is the reason we're still sitting at the top I think."
He added, "But as I said earlier, we've got guys who haven't played in important games in March."
Lindholm, 29, has appeared in 19 games with the Vancouver Canucks so far, putting up seven points (four goals, three assists), four penalty minutes and is a minus-five.
His production so far hasn't been great and the Canucks are hoping that he can pick it up in the coming weeks because he'll be relied on heavily during the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in April. Lindholm will be needed in a top-six role and he'll need to prove himself in order for the Canucks to consider offering him a contract or else he'll walk to free agency on July 1st.
