GM Patrik Allvin Making Calls To Upgrade Vancouver Canucks' Top-4 Defense & One Could Be On Its Way
Over the weekend, when the Canucks suffered a devastating 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins, president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford made it abundantly clear that the team needed to add some players in order to be legitimate contenders.
"We need to add a couple of players to really give ourselves a chance to contend." Rutherford said.
This notion of finding a winger and a top-4 defenseman is a narrative that has been apparent since the start of the season.
Patrik Allvin making calls to upgrade the Vancouver Canucks defense and the answer could be Ivan Provorov
On the recent episode of "Insider Trading" NHL insider Pierre LeBrun stressed the Canucks need of finding an upgrade on defense, especially with the injury to Filip Hronek.
»They're making their calls and word is getting around when you talk to sources around the league about what the Canucks are calling about. And certainly A top need has been identified: a top four D.
That's one. That's certainly the top item for the Vancouver Canucks, but also a winger. So they're looking for for both in talking to sources around the league.
«Listen, the top four D is not surprising. Obviously, the team hasn't been the same since Hronek has gone down with an injury.
He's out long term. Now he is going to be back obviously before the another regular season, but despite that the Canucks are intent in trying to go trade for a top four D. They feel they need the depth there."
There have been a lot of names circulating around as viable trade options for the Canucks, but as of late, one name sticks out the most.
The left-shot Columbus Blue Jackets d-man Ivan Provorov is currently on an expiring contract, and can be a significant upgrade on the Canucks second paining.
It makes sense if Allvin can pull the trigger, Provorov has proven to log heavy minutes against the games top players which makes him a valuable asset. He offers a two-way ability, blending in defensive reliability with a above average puck moving ability that Vancouver is in desperate need of.
