Over the past few days, Sportsnet has been highlighting the top-ten scorers from specific nations around the World and on Friday, it was Sweden's turn in the spotlight, and their post featured Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson.
Among Swedish players last season, Elias Pettersson finished in third place for points with 89, the second-highest total he's had in his NHL career. In first place was Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander, who had 98, followed by Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators, who finished the 2023-24 campaign with 94 points.
Elias Pettersson took a step back in his production during the 2023-24 season but still managed to have a solid year and was over a point-per-game player. During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, however, the Sundsvall, Sweden native didn't play particularly well, only recording one goal and six points in 13 games. Pettersson said at the team's end-of-year press conference that he's been dealing with a knee injury since January, so that's likely to blame for his lack of production at times in the second half of the year.
There's no doubt Pettersson is going to bounce back next season and have a big year, potentially with a new linemate as well, with the Canucks signing former Boston Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk to a seven-year contract when the free agent market opened nearly two weeks ago. It'll be interesting to see if Pettersson and DeBrusk are on the same line to start the 2024-25 campaign.
