Former 6'6 New York Rangers Forward Placed on Waivers - Vancouver Canucks Now Have A Decision To Make
Former New York Rangers forward Tim Gettinger has been made available for NHL clubs as the Detroit Red Wings have placed him on waivers.
As always, NHL insider and Sportsnet analyst Elliotte Friedman was the one to make the announcement on X (Formally Twitter).
Tim Gettinger will most likely clear waivers, if so, he will head back down to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins to play out the season.
Last season, the 6'6 forward did not appear in any NHL games, appearing in 55 games for the Griffins.
He almost earned himself a promotion as he scored 12 goals and 13 assists with a pretty rough +/- rating of -20 rating.
Gettinger was a big part of the Griffins' success during the 2023-24 season. Along with prospects Jonatan Berggren, Simon Edvinsson and Sebastian Cossa, Grand Rapids finished second in the AHL's Central Division, clinching the franchise's first playoff berth in five years. Gettinger, who was in his first season with the organization, potted 12 goals and 25 points in 55 games. He did not register a point in eight playoff games. The last time Gettinger saw NHL action was back in the 2021-2022 season where he was a member of the New York Rangers.
He played in only 8 games, scoring 0 points.
Should the Vancouver Canucks Pick Up Tim Gettinger Off Waivers
With the Canucks facing issues with depth, Tim Gettinger could be a solid pick up, clearly Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman thought so,signing him to a one-year, two-way deal worth $775K deal in March.
In 292 AHL appearances, Gettinger has scored 74 goals and 84 assists for 158 points. He also notched eight points in nine games with the New York Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, during the 2023 postseason.
Sometimes, all it takes for a player like Gettinger to find his game is to get an opportunity elsewhere with with a bigger opportunity.
With all the injuries and absences to the Canucks recently, he may even find a spot in the bottom-6 like undrafted signee Max Sasson.
