The Vancouver Canucks' season could mathematically come to an end tonight, without even stepping on the ice amid playoff implications in Minnesota's game.
With their backs against the wall on Tuesday night, the Vancouver Canucks defied the odds and
became the first team in NHL history to erase a three-goal deficit in the final minute of a game, which ultimately kept their slim hopes of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs alive for another day.
While Canucks fans are still elated with last night's result in Dallas, those smiles could turn to frowns later today with the potential that Vancouver's hunt for a playoff spot may be over.
Vancouver Canucks can be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention tonight
We're officially ten days away from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with only five of the 16 spots still up for grabs, with Vancouver holding on by a thread in the Wild Card race in the Western Conference.
The biggest issue for the likes of Francesco Aquilini is the loss of revenue, where they could loses millions of dollars if the Canucks miss out on making the Playoffs.
«The entire NHL business model is based on making the playoffs. There's definitely a missed opportunity, especially for them to follow up on last year's unexpectedly wonderful season that created feelings the marketplace hasn't had since 2011. You're looking at north of $6 million in ticketing revenue per playoff game, and that doesn't include food, concession, and merchandise - that's much more in the neighbourhood of $7.5 to $8 million gross per game.»
According to Matt Larkin of Daily Faceoff, the Vancouver Canucks will officially be eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention if either of the two following scenarios occur:
- St. Louis beats Edmonton AND Minnesota beats San Jose.
- St. Louis and Edmonton both pick up a point AND Minnesota beats San Jose.
"The Vancouver Canucks (36-29-13) got a stay of execution with their historic final-minute comeback over the Dallas Stars Tuesday but face elimination again as an idle team tonight. The Canucks are out if (a) the Blues beat the Oilers AND the Wild beat the Sharks or (b) the Oilers and Blues each collect a point AND the Wild win." Larkin said.
Puck drop in Minnesota and Edmonton tonight is set for 5 pm and 7 pm PT, respectively, so Vancouver Canucks fans should find out their playoff fate at around 10:30-10:45 pm PT.
