On the eve of their first game at Rogers Arena in nearly a month, the Vancouver Canucks have announced a roster move involving top prospect Jonathan Lekkerimaki.
Yesterday, Jeff Paterson of Rink Wide: Vancouver reported that the Canucks sent Arshdeep Bains to the AHL, but there was no corresponding move, leaving the NHL roster at 22 players, until now.
Vancouver Canucks call up top prospect Jonathan Lekkerimaki from AHL
In a post on social media on Tuesday morning, the Vancouver Canucks confirmed that they've sent forward Arshdeep Bains down to the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League, while calling up top prospect Jonathan Lekkerimaki.
"General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that F Arshdeep Bains has been reassigned to Abbotsford (AHL) and F Jonathan Lekkerimaki has been recalled from Abbotsford." the Canucks said on X.
Lekkerimaki, 20, was assigned to the assigned to the American Hockey League back in mid-January and ever since, he's continued his strong play with 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in 11 games with Abbotsford.
With the Vancouver Canucks in need of scoring help and the possibility that they could trade Brock Boeser by Friday, it made perfect sense to call Jonathan Lekkerimaki up right now.
In 11 games with Vancouver this season, the Tullinge, Sweden native has put up three points, including his first career NHL goal back on November 14th against the New York Islanders.
Meanwhile down in the American Hockey League, Lekkerimaki leads the team in goals with 19, while adding nine assists for 28 points in 2024-25, which is pretty good for someone in their first full professional season in North America.
We'll have to wait and see at practice today where Jonathan Lekkerimaki slots in and if he'll be in the lineup tomorrow night as the Vancouver Canucks host the Anaheim Ducks for a 7:30 pm PT puck drop.
