Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin is making Arshdeep Bains pay the price big time
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin has been making some strategic salary cap moves as of late, which will benefit the team down the road, but there is one player who is paying the price big time financially for these moves.
As we have seen in the past couple of weeks, the Vancouver Canucks keep "sending down" and then "calling back up" Erik Brannstrom and Arshdeep Bains to and from AHL Abbottsford, but many are wondering why the keep doing this.
How the cap moves are negatively affecting Arshdeep Bains financially
To put simply, the Vancouver Canucks are able to maximize their cap space savings by sending down the pair of youngsters.
As mentioned the other day when Brannstrom and Bains were dent down for the second time in a week, it was explained that the Canucks can expand their cap due to the fact that each NHL clubs payroll is calculated on daily. So essentially, by "sending them down", the Canucks will save a little on the cap everyday which will add up come the trade deadline. It really is quite smart, but it is negatively impacting the salary of Arshdeep Bains.
The Canucks accrue five times the cap space with Brännström and Bains in the minors compared to when they're on the active roster.
Due to the fact that Bains is still on his entry-level deal, he gets a different salary whether he is in the NHL or AHL. His base NHL salary for this season is $775,000 USD per season, while his AHL salary is $70,000. So, since the cap and salary are based on a daily basis, Bains takes a gigantic pay cut every time they send him down, even if it just for a short period of time.
The NHL calendar year is 192 days, and thus, Bains makes $4,036.45 per day when he's at the highest level. When he's in the AHL, he makes $364.58 per day, a much smaller amount.
He is essentially playing in the NHL on a AHL salary, and even though it is smart by Allvin, many believe it is not right as he should be earning the proper paycheck.
