We have some sad news to share from the hockey world this week as a former first-round pick of the Washington Capitals has passed away.

The hockey world continues to mourn the passing of German national team member Tobias Eder, as well as former NHL Executive Shawn Simpson and sadly this week, the NHL community has lost a member of their alumni.

Former Washington Capitals first-round pick Miika Elomo passes away

In a post on social media on Wednesday, the National Hockey League's Alumni Association announced that former Washington Capitals first-round pick Miika Elomo has passed away.
"The NHL Alumni Association is heartbroken to learn that Miika Elomo has passed away at the age of 47.

We send our heartfelt condolences to Miika's family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time." part of the NHL Alumni Association's post read.
The news was first announced by Ligue Magnus, the top division in France, as well as Les Jokers de Cergy-Pontoise - the club that Elomo was the head coach for.

"The Synerglace Ligue Magnus learned with great sadness of the passing of Cergy-Pontoise coach Miika Elomo. The league offers its full support to Miika Elomo's family, his loved ones and the Cergy-Pontoise club." Ligue Magnus' statement said.

"It is with deep sadness and in a state of shock that we have just learned, today, of the death of Miika Elomo, our head coach. All our thoughts turn to his wife, Maria, his family and his loved ones." Les Jokers de Cergy-Pontoise said in a post on Facebook.

Elomo made two appearances in the National Hockey League with the Washington Capitals, recording one assist.
He would go on to spend the majority of his career in Finland's top division, Liiga, with TPS Turku and Blues, before retiring from professional hockey following the 2004-05 season.
Elomo also represented on a few occasions, with his final appearance coming at the 1996 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship where he finished fourth in scoring with nine points in six games, with only Jarome Iginla, Florian Keller and former Vancouver Canuck Marco Sturm ahead of him.
