Breaking news out of Pittsburgh, as numerous sources including hockey insider Chris Johnston announced the Pittsburgh Penguins placed former first round pick, Kasperi Kapanen on waivers today.
Kapanen was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins 22nd overall back in the 2014 NHL Draft. Kapanen was later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a block buster deal along with other players involved, back on July 1st 2015.
The Penguins then re-acquired Kapanen in a trade with the Maple Leafs back in August 2015 where he's played till today. Kapanen's offensive numbers dried up only scoring 7 goals, and 20 assists in 43 games this season.
Kapanen has one year remaining on his current contract that pays him $3.2 million dollars annually.
"Per @CapFriendly, should Kasperi Kapanen clear waivers and be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he would still count $2.075 million against the Penguins' cap."
Vancouver Canucks Jim Rutherford was a big part of the Penguins decision to draft Kapanen when he was with the Penguins, so you wonder if he will get GM Patrik Allvin to claim Kapanen off waivers knowing him and Rutherford's previously relationship?
