Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford inherited quite the cap hell when they took over the Canucks from Jim Benning. A succession of hefty signings and costly trades is currently holding the Canucks back and it's now become their biggest challenge.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson is the perfect demonstration of it, his almost $8M AAV and the poor quality of his play now puts the Canucks in a tough spot, especially since he holds a No-Movement Clause making him the sole controller of his next destination.

The renowned insider Darren Dreger was on Sekere on Price earlier this week and made quite the statement regarding the Canucks strategy regarding the Swede defenseman:

"We know the Aquilinis historically do not want dead money on the books...maybe as a last-case scenario, they explore the buyout option."

Allvin stated that it wasn't part of their plans to use buy-outs to shed cap space. An OEL buyout at this point would impact the salary cap for the next 8 years but would save almost $10M in total salary.

Dreger's statement suggests that the Canucks aren't fully close to the idea and that they may resort to it. Once OEL got injured, it didn't look like the Canucks' d-core missed him much, would the Canucks be a better team if they got him off their books?
