LATEST | Former NHLer and beloved host Jeff O'Neill on leave': Major Development
Former National Hockey League forward and current radio host Jeff O'Neill is reportedly on leave from TSN, a Bell Spokesperson said on Tuesday.
After missing shows over the last week, including on Monday, his co-host Bryan Hayes on 'Overdrive', a program on TSN1050 Radio, commented on the matter, saying that O'Neill is doing okay.
"He is okay," Hayes said. "All we can say is that we appreciate the messaging. We appreciate the concern. We wanted to let you know that the ODog is on leave, and that's as far as we're going to go with it. But the show's going to continue."
O'Neill joined TSN in 2013, six years after announcing his retirement from the National Hockey League. He's been seen on intermission panels during Maple Leafs and World Junior games on TSN, as well as on the radio with 'Overdrive', as mentioned above.
The King City (Ontario) native was a fifth overall pick of Hartford back in 1994 and went on to appear in 11 NHL seasons with the Whalers, Hurricanes and Maple Leafs. He played a crucial role in the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs helping the Hurricanes reach the Final for the first time in franchise history.
Recent development has shed light on the story. While the reasons for his leave' were unclear, recent clarifications have suggested a new theory:
''Sources tell me Jeff O'Neill has been let go by TSN. Continuously showing up late to meetings, office outbursts and insubordination being the main reasons.''
The way TSN's been handling the situation has been causing an outrage from fans and people are asking for more:
