The Chicago Blackhawks were expected to have two of the biggest trade chips (Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews) moving closer to the deadline and things have certainly not turned the way they expected.

Toews has been the Hawks' captain for as long as many of us can remember. He brought nothing less than three Stanley Cups home with him and has been outstanding for the franchise that drafted him all the way back in 2006.

Frank Seravalli made a statement on the subject minutes ago stating that Toews would not be moved prior to the trade deadline. The seasoned NHL-centerman hasn't played since January 28th and even though he would have been a game changer for any team, the Hawks have decided to respect his choice.

The Hawks' captain then released a heartfelt statement through the team's Twitter.

"First of all, thank you to the fans and all those who have shown concern about my absence. I'm still dealing with the symptoms of Long COVID and Chronic Immune Response Syndrome."

Toews has stepped away from the team for the last little while to focus on his health and it's not a first time occurrence since he took a full year in 2020-2021 to recover from these same symptoms.

His contract comes to an end on July 1st and with the way things have developed on his end, at 34 years of age, it may be pointing to an early retirement for one of the game's greatest leaders.
