Former NHL Executive, Ottawa Media Personality Shawn Simpson Tragically Passes Away at 56

The hockey world has lost a former NHL executive and media personality this week as Shawn Simpson has sadly passed away.
It's been a very tough week for hockey following the passing of 12-year-old Natalia Moore in Michigan, along with German National Team forward Tobias Eder yesterday and now, the sport has lost a beloved member of the media in Ottawa.

The Ottawa Senators took to social media on Thursday morning to share that Shawn Simpson, who was a long-time NHL executive and most recently, a member of the media landscape in Canada's capital, has passed away at the age of 56.
"The Ottawa Senators were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Shawn Simpson, lionhearted member of the Sens media landscape and proud member of the Ottawa community.

Before getting into the management and media side of hockey, Shawn Simpson spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League as a goaltender and was drafted in the third round in 1986 by the Washington Capitals.
Simpson would spend parts of three seasons in the Washington Capitals' system, playing for their American Hockey League affiliate, the Baltimore Skipjacks, while also being the backup in the NHL on two occasions.
After the 1990-91 season, Simpson decided to retire from professional hockey and two years later, was hired as a scout by the Washington Capitals.
During his 16 seasons on the management side of hockey, Simpson spent time as a scout, a Director of Hockey Operations and in 2012-13, his last season as an executive in professional hockey, was a team consultant for the Minnesota Wild.
From 2012 to 2023, hockey fans in the Ottawa region have been able to listen to Shawn Simpson share his thoughts on the game and the Senators on TSN 1200.
