They first announced a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins, they swapped a few picks. While the transaction seemed useless at first, it allowed the Blues to gain the picks they needed to pull a very bold move.
The Blues announced that they had tendered offer sheets to two of the Oilers top prospects in Philip Bromberg and Dylan Holloway:
Elliotte Friedman revealed that Broberg's offer was $4.58M for the next two years, while Holloway's was $2.29M. The Oilers will have seven days to find the cap space and match the offers if they wish to retain their services. If not, they'll receive compensatory picks.
Dylan Holloway is known for his speed, versatility, and potential as a rising star in the NHL. Drafted 14th overall by the Oilers in the 2020 NHL Draft, Holloway quickly made a name for himself with his high-energy play and two-way solid game. Philip Broberg was the 8th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft; Broberg is recognized for his smooth skating, puck-moving solid abilities, and high hockey IQ, which made him a highly sought-after prospect.
This bold move could pay for the Blues as they aimed for two prospects with elevated potential on a team with a challenging financial situation. The last offer sheet that paid off goes a few years back when the Carolina Hurricanes stole Jesperi Kotkaniemi from the Montreal Canadiens.
