When the Canucks selected Vasili Podkolzin at 10th overall in 2019 they thought they were getting a big, skilled winger to play alongside Elias Pettersson.

To this point, Podkolzin hasn't been able to establish himself as a full time NHLer, but his play in the AHL this season gives reason for excitement.

Podkolzin has 15 points in 18 games with Abbotsford, and while he's not the team's top scorer he is driving play and creating chances on a consistent basis.

In last night's 5-2 win over the Ontario Reign, Podkolzin led all skaters with 10 shots on net and scored his team's fourth goal on an empty cage.

Podkolzin is using his size and skill to his advantage, and in Wednesday's win he was noticeable all over the ice.

With the Canucks seeking to add more scoring in their lineup, Podkolzin looks like a confident player ready to earn a call-up to the big club.

When that happens, there's a good chance he never leaves.
