The Canucks and the Flames took the hockey world by surprise last night when they closed a deal sending the former 40 goalscorer Elias Lindholm to the Canucks. There had been plenty of speculation suggesting that Lindholm had chosen not re-sign, but the Swede dropped a bombshell in that regard during the NHL All-Star Opening Ceremony.

While it was rumoured that newest Canuck Elias Lindholm wasn't interested in coming back to the Calgary Flames, the 29 year old said that wasn't the case. Speaking to reporters, Lindholm said he never told the team he wouldn't sign and was always willing to stay in Calgary.

Lindholm has spent most of 6 seasons with Calgary, but as a pending UFA and the Flames headed for what looks like a rebuild, or at least re-tool, the expectation was Lindholm would want to take his services elsewhere.

The centre says, however, that choice was all Calgary's, as he would have been willing to re-sign there.

The Canucks will look to be the beneficiary of that move, and ideally, they hope Lindholm feels the same way about Vancouver as he did about Calgary.
