LATEST | Rutherford takes a shot at Tyler Myers
Jim Rutherford made his first media appearance in a while as the team's upper management talked about their off-season and how they intended to attack this season.
A TOUGH TIME NAVIGATING THE CAP
The Canucks were caught in a tough spot cap-wise. Still, according to Allvin and Rutherford, everything went smoothly since they finally found themselves cap-compliant after trading away Tanner Pearson:
"We're still working through the cap. I think we almost got it unravelled. We're a contract or two away from where we want to be."
Rutherford came in with Patrik Allvin over a year ago, and they've been working hard to undo previous mistakes, the Jim Benning Legacy. The duo had to move significant money before building a roster that resembled what they believed to be a cup contender.
TAKING SHOT AT TYLER MYERS' CONTRACT
Rutherford related to the past when he stated that he could have done nothing for those moves. The team's president did, however, take a shot at Tyler Myers and his contract:
"Moves that were made before me getting here, and I don't even disagree with them but it's been a flat cap since COVID, that's going to change next year, and we're going to be out of some contracts we'd prefer not to have,"
Rutherford's statement " out of some contracts we'd prefer not to have," clearly points at Tyler Myers since it's the only Canucks' contract coming to an end at the end of the season that wasn't signed or acquired by this management.
One thing that did come out of this press conference was everyone's positiveness and confidence regarding the season's debut. They feel more confident about the show they will be showcasing, and Rutherford even adressed his playoff hopes. Pre-season starts soon; it'll give us a better idea of what this season will look like.
