With the Vancouver Canucks' attention right now being on making a push up the NHL standings to get into a playoff spot, as well as monitoring the trade market, General Manager Patrik Allvin may be looking to the future to help secure their goaltending situation for next season and potentially beyond.
Vancouver was in a tough spot last summer and were facing the possibility of having Latvian goaltender Arturs Silovs as their number one guy until Thatcher Demko was able to return from his injury.
Just after training camp began, following weeks of negotiations, the Vancouver Canucks were able to get a deal done with free agent netminder Kevin Lankinen for the 2024-25 campaign worth $875,000 USD.
Since joining the Canucks, Lankinen has been solid between the pipes for Rick Tocchet and now it appears the club is actively working towards re-signing the pending unrestricted free agent.
On Thursday's edition of Early Insider Trading on TSN, Pierre LeBrun reported that both the Vancouver Canucks and Kevin Lankinen have expressed a desire to work on a contract extension that'll see the Finn remain in British Columbia next season.
LeBrun also went on to guess that Kevin Lankinen could ask for $4 million USD per season on his next contract.
Lankinen, 29, is a big reason for the Vancouver Canucks remaining in the mix for a playoff spot this season and even set an NHL record in December for most road wins to start a season with 10.
In 30 games this season, the Helsinki native has a 16-8-6 record along with a 2.63 goals against average, a .903 save percentage and four shutouts.
