REPORT | The Canucks next move identified: A trade is more the likely before camp
The Vancouver Canucks have plenty of depth on the wings and if Tanner Pearson is able to return this Fall, as many are expecting, the logjam will grow further.
Patrick Johnston of The Province noted recently that the team won't have enough room for Vasily Podkolzin, Conor Garland, Brock Boeser, Nils Hoglander, even if Tanner Pearson isn't able to return to the team's lineup.
According to Lyle Richardson of Spector's Hockey, the Canucks could move a winger before the start of the 2023-24 season, with the four names mentioned above all possibilities to be on the move, if they decide to go down that route.
"SPECTOR'S NOTE: The Canucks could end up moving one of those wingers before the start of the season. Boeser and Garland are the most notable and frequently surfaced in trade rumors last season but any talk about moving one of them dried up over the course of this summer. Their respective contracts are difficult to move under a flattened salary cap but both have also indicated their wish to remain in Vancouver.
Podkolzin or Hoglander could become the odd man out. They carry more affordable contracts which should make them easier to trade if it comes to that." Richardson said.
There's a very good chance that Vasily Podkolzin won't be moved, he's going to be a big part of the team's future and could become a productive top-six forward in the years to come. Even Nils Hoglander, who spent the majority of last season in the AHL, seems unlikely to be moved.
That would leave Brock Boeser and Conor Garland as options to be dealt out of Vancouver, if the Canucks want to make a trade either before the season or prior to the trade deadline. Boeser is earning $6.65 million per season for the next two years, while Garland is making $4.95 million per season for the next three years, which could make it difficult to trade them, but with the Canucks needing to clear some cap space, it could be a necessary move to deal one of them.
