The Vancouver Canucks have not been given the opportunity to claim former 8th overall pick Adam Boqvist off waivers as the New York Islanders have swooped and claimed his rights.

The Vancouver Canucks had a small percent chance of landing d-man Adam Boqvist as they were way down on the waivers claim order, but their iinterest in him was undeniable in order to upgrade their defense core, but unfortunately, their chances have slipped away.

New York Islanders steal Adam Boqvist away from the Vancouver Canucks

Since the start of the 2024-2025 season, it was clear that General Manager Patrik Allvin was going to need to make upgrades on defense as the Vancouver Canucks are glaringly thin on the right side of their blue line.
Since a trade has not been made in order to fill the holes on defense, when the Florida Panthers placed 24-year-old former 8th overall pick on waivers, the Canucks showed extreme interest in claiming him if given the chance.
The risk to reward ratio was sky high as his strengths in moving the puck efficiently is what the Canucks are in need of, especially making league minimum.
But it was announced today by NHL Insider Chris Johnston that the New York Islanders beat the Canucks to the punch and claimed him.
The 24-year-old has 2 goals and 4 assists for 6 points in 18 games with season with the Florida Panthers after singing a 1-year deal in the offseason.
It is a shame that the Canucks were not given a realistic shot at claiming him, as he would be a great upgrade to the majority of the defense on the Canucks this season.
