"Bit of success last year & you come in lazier" - Rick Tocchet calls out the Vancouver Canucks in media
In the first two games of the season for the Vancouver Canucks, head coach Rick Tocchet has been disappointed to say the least in the performance out of his team. Now, he calls out his team in the media to start battling, "We've got to start going through people, we're not battling hard enough".
It is understandable that Tocchet would have this kind of reaction, in 120 minutes of regulation play and extra time, he has seen blown leads, bad line changes, bad penalties and a lack of effort. he needs them to start getting back to their game.
The driven Vancouver Canucks head coach saw some good, but also cracks in his club's foundation in overtime and shootout setbacks on home ice. They blew a pair of third-period leads, blew the zone, took long shifts, didn't play through the opposition and had short attention spans.
Rick Tocchet calls out the Vancouver Canucks
«Maybe a little bit of success last year and you come in lazier,» suggested Tocchet. «I don't know and I'm not pointing fingers at the players, but they were both winnable games. We have to get to our staples really quick. We've got to start going through people and I don't think we're battling as hard as we should. It is early, but we've got to get to it.»
Yes, it may be the start off the season, but losing streaks and bad habits form quickly, and with a 4 game road trip coming up starting off in Tampa Bay against the Lightning on Tuesday, and the tough task ahead doesn't stop as they face off against the reining Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers on Thursday.
Tochett continues to address the issues he sees in his team
«But we could have been up 3-0 against Philly (Friday) and we lose two games. We've just got to be careful. Can we play better? Yeah. Can we be better coverage wise? Yeah.
«For me, it's simple things. It's our (line) changes and I don't like them this year. And guys are overextending and staying out there for 50 seconds. We're doing stuff that we didn't do last year for the majority of the time.»
