The Abbotsford Canucks announced the signing of two free agent defencemen on Wednesday afternoon.

The team announced they'd be adding Zach Okabe and Zach Berzolla to one year AHL deals, Okabe a forward and Berzolla a right shooting defenceman.

Okabe completed a 5 year college career at St. Cloud State last season, and immediately jumped into the pro ranks with the Cleveland Monsters - scoring 2 goals and an assist in 9 games.

At offensive peak of his college career, Okabe tallied 36 points in 41 games.

The winger is on the small side at 5'9, and has an interesting backstory having been born in Japan and learning to play hockey in Australia before eventually making his way to North America.

Berzolla on the other hand is a big 6'2, right shooting defenceman who has bounced between the ECHL and AHL in his professional career.

The 26 year old from New Jersey was up and down between AHL Hartford and ECHL Cincinnati before moving on to the Florida Everblades, winning the Patrick J. Kelly cup as ECHL champion.

Abbotsford kicks off their regular season on October 11 against the Calgary Wranglers.
