But if the Canucks miss out on Jake Guentzel, which could be a possibility if they're unable to meet the salary he's seeking, who could Patrik Allvin turn his attention to? Well, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman mentioned a former Canuck as a potential target on his most recent edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast.
During the podcast, Friedman mentioned that if the Canucks miss out on Guentzel, he wonders if they could turn their attention to Tyler Toffoli, who is coming off his second consecutive 30+ goal season.
Toffoli, a native of Scarborough, Ontario, appeared in 17 games between the regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs with the Vancouver Canucks during the 2019-20 campaign. In those 17 games, he had 14 points (eight goals, six assists), ten penalty minutes and was a minus-one.
Ideally, the Canucks would love to land Jake Guentzel and have been in pursuit of him since before the NHL's trade deadline in early March. Guentzel's age and scoring ability are big positives for Patrik Allvin and the Canucks because he fits into the competitive window Vancouver has and addresses a need in the top-six, possibly playing alongside Elias Pettersson. But if they're unable to make it work, Tyler Toffoli would be a great backup plan.
The 32-year-old Toffoli is showing no signs of slowing down after recording 33 goals with the New Jersey Devils and Winnipeg Jets this season. On a three or four year deal around $5-5.5 million, it would be a great pick up for Patrik Allvin, but it's hard to nail down what Toffoli could be looking for on his next contract.
