Hronek, who is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1st, played exceptionally well to start the 2023-24 season alongside Quinn Hughes. Still, in his last 29 games before Monday's clash with Los Angeles, he only recorded nine points.
Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin has expressed his desire to re-sign Filip Hronek and have him back in the fold for the 2024-25 season and beyond. Still, it may be tricky with the team's cap situation and other free agents needing to be signed this summer.
In an article on Sportsnet, Luke Fox shared that Patrik Allvin has already made a long-term contract offer to Filip Hronek and his camp.
It's also being reported by Irfaan Gaffar that the contract offer made to Hronek and his camp was rejected. The offer was in the range of eight years and roughly $52 million, which would've worked out to a cap hit per season of $6.5 million.
Hronek and his camp reportedly seek more than $7 million per season on his next contract, which will be extremely tough in Vancouver. There's no doubt that Hronek would like to remain with the Canucks and that Patrik Allvin, along with the team's coaching staff, wants him to stay, but if the number he wants is more than they can agree to, management may have to look at trading his RFA rights this summer. However, that would be a worst-case scenario.
The Hradec Kralove, Czechia native, is having the best season of his National Hockey League career, despite his struggles in the last 30 games. In 72 games this season, Hronek has 45 points (five goals, 40 assists), 36 penalty minutes, and is tied for fourth in the NHL in plus/minus at plus-32.
Do you think the Vancouver Canucks should re-sign Filip Hronek at the end of the 2023-24 season or trade his RFA rights to try and get a decent piece to help the team at a cheaper salary? Let us know what you think in the poll below!
