The Vancouver Canucks ended 2024 struggling, falling 3-1 to the Calgary Flames on New Year's Eve and in doing so, falling out of the second wild card spot.

The team's recent struggles have been no secret, and while an alleged rift between superstars Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller has dominated headlines and Pettersson has received his fair share of criticism, a growing goal drought for J.T. Miller has largely avoided headlines.

The Canucks star forward is now ten games without a goal, and twenty if empty netters aren't included.

Miller has 6 goals and 18 assists in 26 games, far from the pace of 2023-24 which saw him notch 103 points.

And while Elias Pettersson has been subject to criticism from the media and even his own GM for his poor play, Miller's own disappointing season has not been as big a talking point.

The 31 year old has been more productive of late than Pettersson- who hasn't played since December 23- posting 8 assists in his last 10 compared to Pettersson's 3 goals and 2 assists, but Miller also went pointless in 4 of those games.

Pettersson's struggles are hogging the headlines, but both players need to step up if the team has a chance of turning things around.

Both players thriving in each other's absence

Both Pettersson and Miller have spent time acting as the main offensive driver with the other out of the lineup this season, and both players have stepped up in the other's absence.

The 26 year old Pettersson scored 15 points in 8 games when J.T. Miller stepped away in November, while in a smaller sample size J.T. Miller has 3 points in the last two games without Pettersson.

They've been separated on the power play and are even playing better without one another, the pressure to make a move may be growing for Patrik Allvin.
