Brock Boeser's Fate with the Vancouver Canucks Addressed by General Manager Patrik Allvin
The Vancouver Canucks decided not to make any moves at the NHL's trade deadline, which means Brock Boeser remains with the team, at least for now.
Brock Boeser, who is a pending unrestricted free agent on July 1st, was rumored for weeks to be on the move ahead of the deadline, but nothing materialized
due to weak trade offers, according to Patrik Allvin.
By keeping Brock Boeser around in hopes of a chance at making the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the teams risks losing him for nothing as an unrestricted free agent this summer, something Patrik Allvin spoke about yesterday.
Patrik Allvin opens up about potentially losing Brock Boeser as a UFA
After the trade deadline passed, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin met with reporters to discuss how the day unfolded and was asked about Brock Boeser potentially leaving the club as a free agent at the end of the season.
Allvin acknowledged that it's a possibility that could happen and that's the risk you have to take sometimes, especially as he didn't receive any offers that he liked prior to the 12 pm PT trade deadline.
"Yeah, I guess with the outcome of today. I didn't really have any other options, that's part of the business and the risk you have to take to be in it." Allvin said.
If the offers weren't there for Brock Boeser yesterday, then it makes complete sense for Patrik Allvin to hold onto him, rather than dealing him for something small that might not benefit the organization going forward.
The Vancouver Canucks can also now circle back with Brock Boeser and his agent, Ben Hankinson, to see if they can come to terms on a contract extension to avoid him hitting the free market on Canada Day.
Earlier this season,
the Canucks offered Brock Boeser a five-year contract worth $40 million ($8 million AAV), which was turned down by the 28-year-old as he is looking for more term on his next deal.
We'll see where things go in the coming months, but if the Vancouver Canucks do have one advantage over other teams that could try to get him on July 1st, is that between now and then, they can offer him eight years, rather than the maximum of seven on the open market.
