On July 8th, 1995, the National Hockey League held their annual Entry Draft and it gave the Vancouver Canucks an opportunity to make a big addition to their roster for five seasons.
General Manager Pat Quinn decided that the Canucks needed some more firepower among his forward group and acquired Alexander Mogilny and a fifth-round round pick from the Buffalo Sabres. With that fifth-round pick, the Canucks selected forward Todd Norman, who never played for the team.
In exchange, the Canucks sent forward Michael Peca, defenceman Mike Wilson and a first-round pick to the Sabres, which they used the latter to select Jay McKee 14th overall.
Mogilny, 55, is one of the best players to ever come out of Russia and he still is waiting to receive a call from the Hockey Hall of Fame to be inducted and will have to see if 2025 is his year after becoming eligible back in 2009.
The Khabarovsk native spent parts of five seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, lighting the lamp 55 times during his first year with the team. In 312 games with Vancouver, Mogilny had 308 points (139 goals, 169 assists) along with 144 penalty minutes and was a plus-24. During the 1999-00 campaign, the Canucks dealt Mogilny to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Brendan Morrison and Denis Pederson.
