Trade Destinations Emerge For Vancouver Canucks Defenseman Vincent Desharnais
The Vancouver Canucks may be looking to add to their blue line in the coming months, but it also looks like a defenseman on their NHL roster could be on his way out before the March 7th trade deadline.
Earlier this week, Rick Dhaliwal shared that he's heard Vincent Desharnais' name is out their on the trade market.
"A couple of people have told me that Desharnais' name is out there. Some think his name is out there in the trade market." Dhaliwal said.
He added, "Look Don, they signed him in the summer. Great size, great potential, but he's having a hell of a time being a regular defenseman. And what has this regime told us in the past Don? And you've brought this up many times. When something doesn't work out for these guys, whether it's a trade or July 1st, they rectify it."
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman also shared a bit of an update shared an update during the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada, saying that the Canucks are looking to give Vincent Desharnais a fresh start elsewhere.
Friedman added that initially, Patrik Allvin didn't want players or prospects in return in any deal involving Vincent Desharnais, as they only wanted draft picks to give themselves a bit more cap flexibility, but now they're willing to consider all possibilities.
"I did hear a little bit the Canucks prefer draft picks in return because they wanted some roster and cap flexibility," Friedman said. "The Canucks, I have now heard, are willing to consider all options in order to help Desharnais a fresh start."
Trade destinations emerge for Vancouver Canucks defenseman Vincent Desharnais
Stephen Roget of Canucks Army examined ten trade destinations for Vincent Desharnais and there's some interesting teams that he could be dealt to, depending on who has interest in the 28-year-old.
Among the teams mentioned by Stephen Roget are the Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers and Tampa Bay Lightning, all three of whom are likely looking for depth pieces to aid them in a potential deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"Suggesting that a team as well-built as the Avalanche would have interest in Desharnais might sound strange. But minus Josh Manson, as they currently are, their right side is actually a little weak, with Sam Malinski and Calvin de Haan holding down spots in the regular rotation as of this moment." Roget said about the Colorado Avalanche as a potential landing spot.
He added, "On top of that, the Avalanche have the eighth-worst penalty kill in the NHL at just 74.4%. Desharnais replaces a bit of what Manson brought there, and a bit of Manson's sandpaper. And with all that money on LTIR still, the Avalanche can afford not to be especially frugal with their acquisitions." With the NHL's trade deadline 82 days away, the Vancouver Canucks can be patient on the Vincent Desharnais front and if he's able to play better for an extended period over the next month, it could help Patrik Allvin maximize the return they get.
