Last summer, Kassian inked a professional tryout contract with the Anaheim Ducks but ultimately never made the final roster and was released, becoming an unrestricted free agent again. Weeks following his release, Kassian decided to hang up the skates and announced his retirement from professional hockey.
While everyone thought Kassian was done with hockey, he shocked many and returned to the game earlier this year, signing with HC Sparta Praha for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
But, just as the playoffs were beginning, Kassian ended his contract early to return home to Canada for personal reasons and it was unclear what his plans were for next season. In eight games during his stint in Czechia, Kassian put up three points (two goals, one assist), four penalty minutes and was a plus-four.
According to Hockey News Hub on X, Kassian is now represented by the Russian-based Winners Hockey Agency. Kassian's agent says that his client is being considered for a contract with KHL club HC Traktor Chelyabinsk if one of their foreign players doesn't re-sign with the team.
Kassian, a native of Windsor, Ontario, spent parts of seven seasons with the Vancouver Canucks where he recorded 135 points (55 goals, 80 assists), 556 penalty minutes and was a minus-19.
