A former Vancouver Canucks goaltender has earned himself a new NHL contract on Saturday.

The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Sunday that they've agreed to terms on a one-year contract extension for the 2024-25 season with goaltender Spencer Martin. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the cap hit on Martin's new deal is $775,000.

"Spencer has been an excellent addition to our team," Hurricanes General Manager Don Waddell said. "He stepped right in and played well for us, and we're excited to sign him for next season."

Martin, 28, has been rock solid for the Carolina Hurricanes after being claimed off waivers from the Columbus Blue Jackets nearly two months ago. In five appearances with Carolina, Martin has a record of 4-0-1 with a 1.97 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. Prior to joining the Hurricanes, he had a 3-8-1 record in 13 games with Columbus.

The Oakville, Ontario native joined the Vancouver Canucks organization in the summer of 2021 after being traded to them by the Tampa Bay Lightning. He served as the primary backup to Thatcher Demko last season and in his tenure as a Canuck, he had a record of 14-15-4 with a 3.56 goals against average and an .887 save percentage.

With the Canucks acquiring Casey DeSmith from the Montreal Canadiens before the start of the regular season to be the backup to Thatcher Demko, Martin was placed on waivers where he was subsequently claimed by Columbus.
