LATEST | Flames' Andersson likely to be suspended after dangerous hit to Patrik Laine's head
In the dying seconds of Friday's game between the Blue Jackets and Flames, Columbus forward Patrik Laine was attempting to put the puck in the empty net when Calgary's Rasmus Andersson came in and hit the Finn in the head.
According to the box score, Rasmus Andersson picked up a five-minute major for elbowing Patrik Laine, while his teammate Jonathan Huberdeau was handed a game misconduct.
On Saturday morning, it was announced by the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety that Rasmus Andersson will have a hearing for his hit on Patrik Laine. The hearing will likely be over the phone, so a possible suspension won't last five games.
"Calgary's Rasmus Andersson will have a hearing today for Elbowing/Charging Columbus' Patrik Laine."
As for Patrik Laine's current health status, according to Aaron Portzline, he didn't travel with the Blue Jackets to Minnesota after the game.
"Told that #CBJ Patrik Laine did not travel with the club to Minnesota after last night's game. No word yet from #CBJ on his status."
It will be interesting to see what comes of Andersson's hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety. I think everyone can agree that the hit was unnecessary, especially with only seconds remaining in the game, so there's no doubt Andersson will receive some suspension, it's just a matter of how many games.
