Columbus Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell is navigating a challenging situation as he continues to explore trade options for Patrik Laine.

During a recent interview on TSN's "OverDrive," Waddell acknowledged the difficulty in moving Laine, given the Finnish forward's vocal desire to leave Columbus. Laine's desire to move on stems from various locker room issues that predate Waddell's tenure as GM.

"This is different because it's harder to bring him back knowing the situation. But saying that, that might be the option," Waddell admitted. With Laine carrying a significant cap hit of $8.7 million for the next two seasons, finding a trade partner has proven challenging.

Waddell mentioned that while he's engaged with two or three teams, a deal has yet to materialize. Waddell is prepared to welcome Laine back and work through the situation if a trade isn't finalized before training camp.

Laine's 2023-24 season was marred by injuries and time spent in the NHL/NHLPA player-assistance program, which complicated trade talks. He was cleared to return in late July but remains in recovery from shoulder surgery, adding further uncertainty to his future.

Despite the challenges, Waddell remains patient, noting that if Laine returns to form as a goal-scorer, his value could increase, potentially leading to a deal later in the season. With two years left on his contract, the 26-year-old winger may still have a role to play in Columbus if a suitable trade doesn't materialize.
