Former Canuck reportedly a favourite to land NHL head coaching job
A former Vancouver Canucks forward could soon see himself back behind the bench in the National Hockey League, this time in a head coaching role.
According to Dennis Bernstein of The Fourth Period, former Vancouver Canucks forward and current Ontario Reign head coach Marco Sturm is one of the favourites to land the vacancy with the San Jose Sharks.
Bernstein went on to add that Sturm met with the San Jose Sharks for an interview this past weekend.
"Hearing Marco Sturm, current Ontario Reign head coach and one of the favorites for Sharks HC vacancy met with San Jose brass over Memorial Day weekend." Bernstein said.
Sturm, 45, spent 14 seasons in the National Hockey League, appearing in 938 career games with the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers before hanging up the skates in 2013.
The Dingolfing, Germany native's time with the Vancouver Canucks wasn't very long, only playing six games with them during the 2011-12 season before being traded with Mikael Samuelsson to Florida Panthers for Steven Reinprecht, David Booth and third round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
After his playing career concluded, Sturm turned his attention to coaching, where he started out with the German national team in 2015, being named Head Coach and General Manager. Three years later, Sturm led Germany to the gold medal game at the Winter Olympics, where they'd go on to lose to Russia.
Later in 2018 after catching the attention of teams here in North America, he was named an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings, a role he held until 2022 before spending the last two seasons as the bench boss of their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign.
