There's no question that the Vancouver Canucks would like to add a defenceman to their roster and that's been well known for several weeks now.
Plenty of names have been suggested as options including Calgary's Chris Tanev and Nikita Zadorov, along with Andrew Peeke of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
With Carson Soucy out until late-December or early-January, it could force General Manager Patrik Allvin to get desperate to make a move. But who could the Canucks offer in order to get some much needed help?
On 'Halford & Brough', Mike Halford and Jason Brough discussed the possibility of the Canucks using Nils Hoglander as trade bait to add a defenceman. Halford suggests that he doesn't think head coach Rick Tocchet will get to the point of trusting him or elevating him and that he's fairly unpredictable as to what he brings to the lineup game in, game out.
Hoglander, 22, has been up with the Canucks in the NHL all season thus far after spending the majority of the 2022-23 campaign in the American Hockey League with Abbotsford. In 16 games, the Bocktrask, Sweden native has seven points (five goals, two assists), six penalty minutes and is a plus-seven.
It's never easy to move on from young players including someone like Nils Hoglander because you never know what type of player they could develop into once they're traded to another organization. However, if the Canucks feel like Hoglander could get them the best defenceman in return, then it's absolutely something Patrik Allvin should consider.
