Canucks at the top of their game: Quinn Hughes makes a promising statement on the team's addition
In just five NHL seasons, Quinn Hughes has transformed from a one-dimensional prodigy known primarily for his exceptional skating and passing into a complete superstar who influences games as much as nearly any player in the league.
Critics once doubted Hughes' defensive abilities, but he silenced them by becoming a reliable force in his zone. They said he couldn't score; he netted 17 goals last season. He wasn't considered on the same level as elite defensemen like Cale Makar, Roman Josi, or Adam Fox until he won the Norris Trophy. Now, the only thing left for Hughes is to win it all. He addressed the team's most recent additions and firmly believes they have taken a step in the right direction.
"I think we'll be better. We added a lot of depth up front. We added some guys like Jake DeBrusk, who can really play and maybe contribute to the power play. I was pretty vocal with Patrik (Allvin, the Canuck general manager) about the (Kiefer) Sherwood add. Just playing him in the playoffs against Nashville and seeing his competitiveness and what he brings, you need guys like that on a championship team.
"I think that was a tremendous add, and then (Danton) Heinen and (Derek) Forbort and the other guys. Daniel Sprong can really score. I think that we added depth, we added goal scoring. I think we probably learned a lot last year, too, and we're just continuing to move up the mountain." The Canucks appeared poised for greatness four years ago after their deep playoff run in the pandemic bubble. Still, the team faltered despite the rise of Hughes, Elias Pettersson, Thatcher Demko, and a rejuvenated J.T. Miller. They slipped, only to be revived last season under coach Rick Tocchet.
"When that happened before, we were a young, up-and-coming team," Hughes reflected. "Now, I'm going to be 25. Petey's 26, Demko's 29, and Millsy's 32. We've all grown. I'm five times the player I was then, and so are the others. We're at our peak now."
Hughes believes that with their matured core, a bolstered lineup with players like Filip Hronek and Jake DeBrusk, and a dialled-in coaching staff, the Canucks are better equipped than ever. "We've learned from our past. We should be an excellent team."
