It's been a sad morning for the hockey community after learning of the passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew.
Tributes have begun to pour out from teams around the National Hockey League and other federations such as the IIHF.
In a post on social media, the Vancouver Canucks released a statement on the passing of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, saying that they send their sympathies to the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames organizations, as well as their family and friends.
"Canucks Sports & Entertainment join the hockey community in mourning the heartbreaking loss of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the Gaudreau family, their friends, and the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames organizations during this incredibly difficult time. Johnny's legacy as an outstanding player and person will forever be remembered, and our thoughts are with all those who were fortunate enough to know and love both Johnny and Matthew." The Canucks said.
Johnny Gaudreau began his NHL career back at the end of the 2013-14 season with the Calgary Flames after spending three seasons at Boston College. Gaudreau would go on to appear in 763 career games in the National Hockey League for the Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets, putting up 743 points (243 goals, 500 assists).
Johnny's brother Matthew was also a professional hockey player up until his retirement two years ago. Matthew spent his time in the AHL and ECHL, along with a one-year stint in the Swedish third division, HockeyEttan.
Our thoughts are with the Gaudreau family and the teammates and friends of Johnny and Matthew at this difficult time.
