The Vancouver Canucks made another addition to their roster over the weekend, bringing in Daniel Sprong to shore up their forward group. While Patrik Allvin is likely done adding to his forward group on the blue line, there's a chance we could see someone brought in, and there may be someone the Canucks could be eyeing up.
While a guest on a recent edition of Halford and Brough, Rick Dhaliwal linked the Vancouver Canucks to free-agent blueliner Tyson Barrie as a low-cost, puck-moving option. However, Dhaliwal didn't specify if it could be a guaranteed deal for 2024-25 or a professional tryout contract (PTO).
Barrie, 32, became an unrestricted free agent on July 1st after the Nashville Predators decided to move on from him. It was a tough season for the veteran blueliner, who was limited to just 41 games due to injuries and being a healthy scratch on multiple occasions, including leading up to the trade deadline when many expected he would've been moved.
In 41 games, the Victoria, British Columbia native put up 15 points (one goal, 14 assists), 16 penalty minutes and was a minus-ten. He went on to add one assist in one game during Nashville's first-round playoff series against the Canucks.
If the Canucks can bring Tyson Barrie in on a one-year deal at a low cap hit, it could be a smart move. Barrie would likely slot in on the third pairing, but given the offence he's put out throughout his career from the back end (505 points in 809 games), he could be an option for Rick Tocchet on the second powerplay unit.
