The Canucks knew there was a possibility they'd only have him for the remainder of the season and the playoffs, but they still gave their best when they sent their re-signing offer.
The belief was that Lindholm didn't like Vancouver enough to commit to the city long-term, and it's been confirmed. When the Swede first arrived in town, it wasn't a match made in heaven, and the Canucks even considered moving him before the trade deadline. Lindholm didn't like how this was handled, and now he hopes to get to the market and get every penny he can get.
Frank Seravalli was on Flames Talk earlier and adressed the situation. He confirmed that Elias Lindholm was headed to the open market:
Reports had the Canucks throwing up to $7M for the next seven years at the centerman, who would've been linked to the Canucks until the time he's 37. Some feel the Canucks dodged a bullet since he rejected the offer.
Lindholm played a vital part in the Canucks playoff trip; even if they don't re-sign him, they'll have to find someone to replace him, as he played precious minutes with Conor Garland and Dakota Joshua, at five-on-five, on the penalty kill and the power play.
