Sunday afternoon was the final day for teams to place players on the waiver wire ahead of the roster submission deadline with the National Hockey League, which is at 2 pm PT/5 pm ET today.
A number of well-known names were among the 59 placed on the waiver wire on Sunday, among those being goaltender Jiri Patera, who the Canucks had signed to a two-year deal back in July. Last week, amid goaltending issues of their own, the Boston Bruins claimed Jiri Patera, but waived him on Sunday after re-signing Jeremy Swayman.
On Monday, as many were expecting, the Vancouver Canucks claimed Jiri Patera off waivers from the Boston Bruins, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman is reporting. Because the Canucks were the only team to place a waiver claim, they're now allowed to assign Patera to the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League.
Some more good news for the Canucks came today as it was revealed that Erik Brannstrom, who the team acquired from the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday evening, cleared waivers and will be assigned to the Abbotsford Canucks.
Among the others that were claimed off waivers on Monday afternoon are - James Reimer (claimed by Anaheim Ducks), Zach Aston-Reese (claimed by Columbus Blue Jackets), Raphael Lavoie (claimed by Vegas Golden Knights) and Cole Schwindt (claimed by Vegas Golden Knights). Surprisingly, former first-round pick of the Calgary Flames, Jakob Pelletier, cleared waivers and will be heading to the AHL.
With the roster submission deadline just hours away, we should get a clear picture soon on what the Vancouver Canucks' opening night roster will look like.
