Vancouver Canucks Make Last Minute Call-Up Before Facing the Columbus Blue Jackets
As the Vancouver Canucks are set to face-off against the Columbus Blue Jackets, they have announced a slew of call-ups from the AHL Abbotsford Canucks.
Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin has been a real busy man this season.
He has managed to play a specific strategy that will help the Canucks have a significant amount of cap space by the trade deadline this season.
On Canucks off days, he has been sending down players to the AHL Abbotsford Canucks, but in reality, these are just "paper transaction" that help the team acrue more money against the salary cap.
Vancouver Canucks «Recall-Up» Max Sasson from the Abbotsford Canucks
The most recent victim of these «paper call ups/send down"s is power forward Max Sasson.
Fans will remember earlier in the year when the Canucks would assign Arshdeep Bains and Aatu Räty to Abbotsford on nearly every day off only to recall them to the NHL the next day. This is all done with an eye on accruing cap space so that the Canucks can be more flexible at the Trade Deadline When Sasson was "sent down" yesterday, it was believed that it could be for two reasons, either it was for what was mentioned above and to accrue cap space, or it was to make room for J.T Miller, who has been out the last 2 weeks on a leave of absence.
But, it was announced as the former was true, that even though J.T. Miller is back skating with the team, he will not be rejoin the Canucks just yet.
According to Vancouver is Awesme.com, they broke down exactly why the Sasson was called up after Lekkerimaki and McWard.
The reason that order matters is that calling up Lekkerimäki and McWard first pushed the Canucks right up to the salary cap - in fact, slightly over by around $8,500. So, when Hronek was placed on LTIR, being that close to the salary cap maximized the size of their LTIR pool for exceeding the salary cap.
Fans will be happy that Sasson is back with the team, since being pointless other than recording an assist in his artist two games, the youngster has provided a much needed spark in the physicality department, and even head coach Rick Tocchet has taken notice .
