2 names have popped up to assist Tocchet
Everyone seems to agree that Bruce Boudreau will coach his last game behind Vancouver Canucks on his bench once the game ends against the oilers. Rick Tocchet is previewed as his successor and it appears that along with him, he will bring his own staff.
It was already brought up that we shouldn't be surprised to see former Penguins star defenseman Sergei Gonchar coming along. Known as the «defense whisperer» there probably isn't a better candidate available for that role. The work he accomplished with the Pens' defenseman in their back-to-back playoff run speaks for itself.
Another former Penguin was brought up and this one may come as a surprise, Mark Recchi. The rumblings suggest that Tocchet will come with his staff, which makes sense, but there is no real confirmations on that matter. It was Rick Dhaliwal that actually brought it up on Sekeres and Price:
«We've heard Sergei Gonchar's name. Somebody floated out Mark Recchi's name...I don't have any confirmation on those, by the way, just stuff that you hear.»
Mark Recchi has previous experience on an NHL bench, he was the Pens' development coach notably in 2016 and 2017 for their cup runs, before stepping onto the bench as an Assistant Coach.
Recchi, just like Gonchar, has had quite a successful career as a player. He took part in 1652 regular season games and registered 1533 points along the way, so he definitely knows how to get it done. During his long-standing, 22 years career, he won the cup on 3 different occasions.
Do you think a Tocchet, Recchi, and Gonchar coaching staff would help the Canucks build new foundations? Clearly, this season is to be forgotten, but can they build bases that will make this team into a contender?
