Hockey Hall of Famer Loses Fight to ALS
It was announced earlier today that Borje Salming (71) had passed away from his fight against ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Salming was a top-end Swedish defenseman that spent most of his American career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Through 17 seasons, the Swede superstar played parts in 1148 regular season games and had a stunning record of 787 points (150 goals and 637 assists). During his time he was a Norris Trophy nominee on four occasions. In 1997, he was introduced to the Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame. In 2008, he was recognized in the IIHF centennial All-Star team alongside the Edmonton Oilers' legend Wayne Gretzky.
Salming was a pioneer in the NHL's development to what it is today since he was one of the first players to cross the ocean to play hockey on American soil.
