MAJOR | Canucks are front runners to acquire a right-handed NCAA defenseman
Patrik Allvin and the Canucks have come up big already on the NCAA free-agent market since they announced the signing of Max Sasson and Akito Hirose. Hirose made his NHL debut on Sunday while Sasson joined the Abbotsford Canucks for a playoff push.
Recent reports from Rick Dhaliwal stated that the Canucks were not yet done with their shopping among the NCAA free agents and it appears they have emerged as the front-runner for a right-handed shot defenseman.
It appears the Canucks would be topping the list of Cole McWard who'd be looking to turn pro after his sophomore season. McWard is a 6'01'' and 205 pounds defenseman who collected 21 points in 39 games this year, good for second among blueliners in his team.
McWard could either join the Vancouver Canucks on an entry-level contract straight away, burning the first year of that contract for, at best, a few games. Or he could be deferring his ELC to the 2023-2024 season and joining the Abby Canucks of the AHL with an amateur tryout deal.
