The Pittsburgh Penguins made their way into the trade market on Wednesday, completing a pair of trades involving two former Vancouver Canucks defensemen.
At the end of January, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks came together to complete a trade featuring defenseman Marcus Pettersson and this evening, Kyle Dubas decided to swing two more deals involving blueliners.
Pittsburgh Penguins complete two trades involving ex-Vancouver Canucks defensemen
Just after 5 pm PT, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced in a post on social media that they were sending former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Vincent Desharnais, who they got in the Marcus Pettersson trade, to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2028 fifth-round pick.
"The Penguins have acquired a 2028 fifth-round draft pick from the @SanJoseSharks in exchange for defenseman Vincent Desharnais." the Penguins said.
Then an hour later, the Penguins were back at it on the trade market, making a bigger deal by acquiring Tommy Novak and former Canuck Luke Schenn from Nashville, with the Predators landing forward Michael Bunting and a 2026 fourth-round pick.
"The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Luke Schenn and forward Tommy Novak from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Michael Bunting and a 2026 fourth-round draft pick, it was announced today by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas." the club said.
Given the direction the Pittsburgh Penguins are heading in, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense on their part to be adding at the deadline and while it's possible they end up flipping Luke Schenn before Friday, TSN's Darren Dreger says the team values his character and leadership and could keep him around.
"There's a chance the Penguins flip veteran Luke Schenn. See what the market is before Friday. However, Pitt values his character, leadership, toughness and spirit and plans to urgently work to get this team back into contention in the next few seasons." Dreger said on X.
The National Hockey League's trade deadline for the 2024-25 season is set for Friday at 12 pm PT and Canucks Daily will have full coverage of any deals from Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks.
