Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has revealed what the Carolina Hurricanes may be searching for in return for the Martin Necas trade, which could happen at any point in the coming days or weeks.

On Friday, Friedman said on his 32 Thoughts podcast that the Carolina Hurricanes view Martin Necas as a budding star, meaning he has yet to reach his full potential.

Because of that, Friedman mentions that the Hurricanes want someone with star power in return for Necas. It's unlikely that the Hurricanes, at least right now, will consider any packages focused on draft picks and prospects.

"Carolina is letting people know that they consider Necas a budding star, and that's the kind of return they want...Star power is what they want in return, I heard," Friedman said.

With this new information, Patrik Allvin could be amongst the front runners in acquiring Necas. With Filip Hronek's contract negotiations heading nowhere, it's been speculated that the Canucks had been entertaining the idea of trading him. Would Hronek be considered star power enough? The Canucks want to add top-six wingers to play along with Elias Pettersson, and if they can't find an agreement, Hronek could be on the move, whether it's to Carolina or elsewhere.

Patrik Allvin seems more likely to turn his attention to the free-agent market to see who he could get to help the team's top-six forward group. Among the options for the Vancouver Canucks are Jake Guentzel and Tyler Toffoli, both of whom are not expected to re-sign with their current teams - Carolina and Winnipeg.
