BREAKING | Oilers making coaching change: Learning from the Canucks' mistakes
After their poor start to the 2023-24 NHL season, the Edmonton Oilers have fired Head Coach Jay Woodcroft, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
"Edmonton is making a coaching change. Jay Woodcroft being relieved of his duties. Thought last nights win would buy some time, but that's not the case." Friedman said.
Woodcraft, 47, has spent parts of the last three seasons as Head Coach of the Edmonton Oilers, leading them to the Western Conference Final in 2022 and the second round of the playoffs last season.
Despite their win over Seattle last night, the Edmonton still sits seventh in the Pacific Division with a record of 3-9-1, only ahead of the San Jose Sharks by two points.
It's unclear what direction the Oilers will be taking on the coaching front going forward, but it'll be interesting to see if they go with an internal candidate rather than an external one.
