Yesterday's waivers featured former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Travis Dermott, who has since been claimed by the Minnesota Wild, and today, we have a former first-rounder on the wire.
According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, the New York Islanders have placed forwards Pierre Engvall and Oliver Wahlstrom on waivers for the purpose of being assigned to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders.
The move to place Engvall and Wahlstrom on waivers today likely means that Anthony Duclair (lower-body injury) and Mat Barzal (upper-body injury) are ready to return to the Islanders' lineup on Sunday afternoon against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Engvall, 28, has never really lived up to the seven-year deal that the Islanders signed him to back in the summer of 2023.
In 20 games this season with the Islanders, the Ljungby, Sweden native has six points (three goals, three assists), ten penalty minutes and is a minus-three.
Wahlstrom, a native of Portland, Maine, will play in the American Hockey League for the first time since the 2019-20 season, if he clears waivers on Saturday.
So far this season, the 24-year-old winger has only four points (two goals, two assists), nine penalty minutes and is a minus-six in 27 games.
There's no doubt that the Vancouver Canucks will be at least examining the possibility of bringing in Oliver Wahlstrom, as he would be a solid depth piece for the bottom-six, but with where the team is in the waiver order, it's unlikely that'll happen.
We'll know for sure at 11 am PT on Saturday whether or not the Vancouver Canucks have placed a waiver claim on Oliver Wahlstrom or if another team in the National Hockey League has. If no one has, he'll be sent down to the AHL.
