The verdict is in for Sidney Crosby: Massive extension for the future hall of famer
After waiting for two months, Pittsburgh Penguins fans can breathe a sigh of relief on Monday with the news of Sidney Crosby's new contract extension.
On Monday morning, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Sidney Crosby finally were able to agree to terms on a contract extension after he became eligible to sign one back on July 1st.
Crosby's contract extension with the Penguins is for two-years and is worth $8.7 million per season, a nod to his jersey number 87. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the majority of Crosby's contract is bonuses. In year 1, his salary is $780,000 with a $9 million bonus and in year 2, Crosby's salary is set to be $1.09 million, with a bonus of $6.53 million.
"There are no words to properly describe what Sidney Crosby means to the game of hockey, the city of Pittsburgh and the Penguins organization," said Penguins GM Kyle Dubas. "Sidney is the greatest player of his generation and one of the greatest players in the history of the game. His actions today show why he is one of hockey's greatest winners and leaders. Sid is making a tremendous personal sacrifice in an effort to help the Penguins win, both now and in the future, as he has done for his entire career."
Crosby, 37, has spent his entire 19-year career in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who drafted him first overall back in 2005. In 1,272 regular season games, Crosby has 1,596 points (592 goals, 1,004 assists) and 823 penalty minutes. The Cole Harbour native has gone on to add 201 points in 180 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, hoisting hockey's greatest trophy on three occasions - 2009, 2016 and 2017.
By sticking with an average annual value of $8.7 million, Sidney Crosby gives the Pittsburgh Penguins plenty of flexibility with their salary cap situation going forward, which will help them remain a contender and in the mix to add in free agency and on the trade market.
