In March of 2020, Roberto Luongo became the first Florida Panther to have his jersey number retired. He had two separate stints with the franchise, from 2000-2006 and 2013-2019. While he may have had his best years in a Canucks uniform, he spent the bulk of his career in South Beach.
However, despite retiring in 2019, Luongo has yet to have his iconic #1 retired for the Canucks. Elliotte Friedman gave his take on the idea of raising Luongo's number to the rafters in Vancouver:
Whether Luongo will eventually have his number retired by the Canucks has yet to be determined, but judging from his career achievements, Friedman's take on the 32 Thoughts podcast, and the overwhelming sense of appreciation for his years with the team at his Ring of Honour induction, it's looking increasingly likely that we'll see #1 in the rafters at Rogers Arena at some point.
