While it's a great gesture and a nice way to honour Luongo's legacy in Vancouver, it's left many fans and those in the hockey community questioning why the team didn't retire his number 1.
Frank Seravalli was on Sekeres and Price to discuss the topic and a number of potential reasons for not retiring Roberto Luongo's number was brought up.
One big reason mentioned was the fact that Roberto Luongo wanted out of Vancouver, which ultimately led him to being dealt to back to the Florida Panthers. It was also mentioned that 'he's more Florida's guy'.
Another reason mentioned was that the Canucks wanted to preserve the feelings of another team legend to wear the number 1 - Kirk McLean, who is the team's all-time leader in games played.
The 44-year-old spent eight years of his career with the Vancouver Canucks between 2006 and 2014 and is the franchise's all-time leader in wins and shutouts. Luongo also led the Canucks to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011, where they were one win away from hoisting hockey's greatest trophy for the first time in franchise history.
